Red Door pop-up wine bar debuts in Hong Kong
A pop-up wine bar is starting its three-month residency at the heritage site Fringe Club in Central, Hong Kong.
Called the Red Door wine bar, the project is a collaboration between the Red Door Group and Hong Kong based Master of Wine candidate Sarah Heller. Combining food and wine, the bar will run from May to July at the Vault inside the Fringe Club with the possibility for extension, the project partner Heller has told dbHK.
Open from Thursday to Saturday from 6-11pm, the wine bar will offer value wines sourced from all parts of the world, highlighting diversity in terms of geography, style and familiarity. The wine list is curated and designed by Heller, focusing on a 15-wine by the glass selection that changes monthly.
In addition, the wine bar boasts to sell wines priced below market, thanks to the bar’s limited opening hours.
And as part of its ‘Rare Wine’ programme, the bar will offer one-off trophy wines by the glass including Tahbilk Shiraz, Château Musar from 1990s, Rioja and Barolo from 1970s and 1980s, with some Rhône, Bordeaux and Burgundy, in addition to some specials deals that sourced through private collectors, according to the company.
“Hong Kong’s wine scene has improved immensely with amazing French, Italian and natural wine bars, but we felt it was time for an ‘everyman’s wine bar that could be like going over to the apartment of a friend who’s very knowledgeable about wine but isn’t aggressive about it,” Heller told dbHK when asked about the project, “they’ll let you drink your old favorites if you prefer, but if you’re interested they’ll pull out something for you that will blow your socks off.”
Among the food on offer are charcuteries, cheeses, pâtés and rillettes, sourced though the network of top local food suppliers built by Red Door Group over years of organising chefs dinners within Hong Kong and across China.
