Bordeaux leads at HDH sale
Mature claret led the way at Hart Davis Hart’s latest fine wine auction, which was 100% sold and made nearly US$7 million.
Taking place in Chicago, the sale made $6.9m in total – just above the $6.7m high estimate – and all of the 2,439 lots were sold with almost 60% for more than their high estimate.
“Demand for Bordeaux was strong,” the house said in a statement, “as wines from the region brought in over $2.8m.”
Particularly sought-after were mature vintages of Mouton Rothschild, Petrus and Pichon-Comtesse; 328 lots of first growths alone made $1.7m.
Meanwhile, over 500 lots of Burgundy brought in a further $1.8m and three bottles of 2010 Romanée-Conti from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti were the auction’s best-selling lot, going for $45,410.
In addition to the great French wines on offer, there was “aggressive” competition for the Californian wines being sold, including 41 lots of Screaming Eagle and over 100 lots of rye and Bourbon whisky.
The house’s next sale will take place on the weekend of 24 June.
