Brewdog marks Ohio repeal on abv limit with 55% beer

BrewDog is celebrating Ohio’s decision to remove the abv limit on its beers by introducing its eccentric End of History 55% abv beer onto the US market.

Brewdog’s 55% abv End of History beer came housed in an array of artfully dressed stuffed animals.

This week lawmakers in Ohio repealed the state’s long-standing 12% abv limit imposed upon beers sold in the state, where BrewDog will soon be opening its first US brewery and headquarters at a cost of US$30 million.

The cap was originally set in the 1930s with the intention of preventing drunkenness. But as the craft beer scene has continued to grow, pressure to lift the ban has built, culminating in the ban being lifted this week.

To mark the decision, BrewDog has unveiled plans to introduce its 55% abv beer, The End of History, to the US market.

First launched in 2010 with an RRP of £500 a bottle, End of History is a limited-edition blond Belgian ale and was described by the brewer as “the end point of our research into how far we can push the boundaries of extreme brewing, the end of beer”.

The beer is infused with nettles from the Scottish Highlands as well as fresh juniper berries and comes packaged in an array of animal stuffed animals, created by a taxidermist, including stoats, squirrels and hares, all dressed in eccentric outfits.

To achieve its extreme high alcohol content, BrewDog’s brewers use an extreme freezing technique whereby the beer is kept at temperatures well below freezing to separate the water from the solution. The process is then repeated dozens of times, requiring hundreds of gallons of beer to be reduced through the process to produce just enough for a handful of exclusive bottles.

Brewdog plans 5 US bars and brewery

However you’ll need to part with a considerable sum in order to get hold of a bottle. A bottle of End of History will be an exclusive perk to investors that pledge $20,000 or more to the brewer’s Equity for Punks USA crowdfunding model.

“We wouldn’t have a brewery without our army of Equity Punks, it’s that simple. So we figured the end of one history – the dark ages of restriction imposed on craft brewers in Ohio – was the perfect moment to resurrect our End of History, and bring it to a whole new market”, said Brewdog in a statement on its website.

“We will proudly mash in for this epic beer to commemorate the passion, adventure and innovation of the American craft brewing movement that we are joining. It’s going to be quite a ride.”
