London gets its first cidrothèque

Hoping to do for cider what BrewDog bars have done for beer, entrepreneur Aymeric Peurois has launched London’s first cidrothèque.

Each of the ciders is designed to pair with a different crêpe

Called Mamie’s in homage to his grandmother, in addition to cider the site will specialise in crêpes in a hat tip to his birthplace – Brittany.

While focusing on ciders from Brittany and Normandy, the venue will serve ciders from around the world, including the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium and New Zealand.

Among the offerings are Poire Granit d’Eric Bordelet, a Normandy perry with notes of mint and pineapple; and Headley’s Classic American Bourbon Reserve – a Cornish cider aged in Bourbon barres.

Also on pour will be L’Atypique Reserve, an English sparkling cider made using ancient methods from Normandy; and Eric Baron Cuvée Carpe Diem, a sweet cider fermented in oak casks in Finistère.

Crêpes and galettes are enjoyed with “bowls” of cider in Brittany – a tradition Peurois hopes will be embraced in London.

Each of the ciders on the menu is designed to pair with a different crêpe. There will also be a small selection of cider cocktails on offer.

Peurois left a successful City job in 2014 to pursue his dream. “Some of my most cherished memories are afternoon crêpes baked by my grandmother,” he told Street Eats London.

Savoury fillings include egg, ham and emmental; and smoked bacon, sautéed mushrooms and soured cream.

Those in search of something sweeter can enjoy crêpes filled with pears, salted-butter caramel and caramelised pecans; or flambéed in a spirit of your choice: calvados, rum, Grand Marnier or Cognac.

I hope this venue serves GENUINE Normandy cider – but I’m not optimistic. Wheel sea…….
