Two detained in Shanghai for cocaine-infused wine
A young Chinese couple who allegedly attempted to smuggle cocaine dissolved in bottles of wine into China from Brazil have been detained in Shanghai.
According to ShanghaiDaily.com, the pair were placed in detention by customs officials in the first incident of its kind in Shanghai.
The authorities found 32 bottles of different branded wines in two of the couple’s suitcases when they arrived at Pudong International Airport last November.
The couple, aged 24 and 25, were working in Sao Paolo at the time. They told the customs officials that they were asked by a man named “Lin” to take the cases filled with wine to China the day before their departure from São Paulo.
As reported by ShanghaiDaily.com, the pair, who were caught out by an airport screening system, were offered £180 for the “errand.”
Since the screening system, which flags up certain passengers based on their travel records, was introduced in 2013, over 220kg of drugs have been intercepted and 14 suspects detained.
