Saved by the Bell diner to open in Chicago

A pop-up diner inspired by 90s teen comedy Saved by the Bell is set to open in Chicago, serving up dishes including AC Sliders and Macaroni and Screech.

Called Saved by the Max, in homage to the Bayside High teens’ favourite hangout The Max, the diner will open at Wicker Park in Chicago throughout the month of June.

According to its Facebook page, the pop-up diner will feature a full kitchen and bar with Bayside-inspired cocktails and food including AC Sliders, Preppy BLT, Macaroni & Screech, Belding Fries and Lisa Turtle Milkshake all on the menu.

“Were really excited about the initial reaction for this pop up, and yes it’s a real thing,” the shop’s creators said in a statement. “As huge Saved By The Bell fans, we promise to deliver the most fun month of SBTB tributes that principle [sic] Belding would be proud of.”

Events planned include daily costume contests (with the chance to win $100), themed karaoke, trivia and 80s and 90s dance parties and appearances by the Zack Attack cover band.

The American sitcom, that aired on NBC from 1989 to 1993, was set in California and followed a group of students at Bayside High. It spawned two spin-off series, Saved by the Bell: The College Years (1993–94), and Saved by the Bell: The New Class (1993–2000), and two TV movies; Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style and Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas.

Tapping into a trend for TV-themed nostalgia, a bar inspired by the Seinfeld character George Costanza recently opened in Melbourne, while a Will Ferrell themed bar opened last year in New York.
