Takeaways get Michelin makeover

A new business launches in London this September that claims to offer “the first ever Michelin-starred delivery service”, complete with in-house sommelier.

Building on the recent rise of delivery operations such as Just Eat and Deliveroo, Supper is adding a fine dining twist, promising to ensure that customers can enjoy gourmet dishes and restaurant standard presentation in the comfort of their own home or office.

The company has already signed up 19 restaurants across London, including Michelin-starred Indian venues Benares and Tamarind, City steakhouse M Restaurants, Japanese eateries Matsuri and Tsunami, and Mayfair pizza outlet Bocconcino.

Specially designed thermal-lined boxes on motorbikes mean that Supper can cater for up to 20 people in a single order, with the uniformed drivers and “stylishly branded” delivery bags completing this upmarket version of the takeaway experience.

To complement its high-end food, Supper has added what it describes as an “in-house sommelier service”. Each dish will be offered with a pairing recommendation from Supper’s wine list, which has been compiled with the help of consultant Allen Cheesman and Berkmann Wine Cellars.

Supper’s founder Peter Georgiou told the drinks business that prices were likely to compare favourably with the cost of ordering wine in restaurant. “There is a mark-up, but nothing like the restaurants where you can find these wines,” he remarked.

By way of illustration, Georgiou noted that Supper will offer a bottle of Veuve Clicquot NV Champagne for £46, a little above its standard retail price of around £38 but some way below the £85 that the same product is typically listed at in outlets such as the Searcys Champagne bar chain.

Indeed, Georgiou suggested that the ability to offer such relative value in this area was an aspect that his company could develop further in future. “Going forward we’ve thought about lowering the cost of wine and turning into a bigger business, but as yet, it’s just a supplementary offering,” he commented.
