Bordeaux 2014: week round-up 7-13 May
En primeur releases in the last week have covered first growths, the occasional Right Bank estate and a smattering of Left Bank properties.
Last Thursday Pomerol estate l’Eglise Clinet emerged at €132 a bottle ex-négoce a 24% increase on its 2013 price and the highest climb so far by a châteaux on either side of the Gironde.
Also out that day were Climens which became the first Sauternes estate to raise its price this campaign, up 13.5% to €43.8 and third growth d’Issan which likewise went up 13% though only to €30 p/b.
There were no releases on Friday but on Monday it was the turn of Margaux and second wine Pavillon Rouge to emerge.
Margaux towed the first growth line and matched the releases of Mouton Rothschild and Haut-Brion with an 11% rise to €240 p/b – the same price as its 2012. Pavillon Rouge went up 8% to €78.
Carmes Haut-Brion and Calon Ségur turned heads on Tuesday with 12% rises on their 2013 prices to €32.4 p/b and €42 respectively, both have sold quite well according to merchants.
Out late yesterday was Pontet-Canet with an “ambitious” €66 p/b price, the first tranche of Lafite at €288 p/b though expect a more general price of around €335 p/b (the 2012 price) when the second price is released and Haut Bailly at €43.2 p/b.
