Council calls for flattened pub to be rebuilt

A historic pub that was torn down without permission should be rebuilt brick by brick, a council has recommended.

Demolition teams moved in on the Carlton Tavern in Kilburn, North London, last month without warning and began pulling it down.

The Carlton Tavern was sold last year to CLTX, who had submitted a planning application to Westminster Council for the building to be demolished and replaced with a pub at ground level and 10 residential units over four floors. The plans were rejected, however the demolition went ahead regardless, much to the surprise of residents and council officials.

Westminster City Council confirmed that the demolition had taken place without authorisation and this week recommended that it should be rebuilt within 18 months “so as to recreate in facsimile the building as it stood immediately prior to its demolition on 8th April 2015.”

Built in the 1920s, the building was under consideration for listed status as it was the only building in Carlton Vale to have survived WW2 bombing.
