Sewage beer given the go-ahead
A group of American home brewers has been given the green light to create beer brewed using recycled sewage water.
The idea to create the sewage beer belongs to a local utility company wishing to prove the effectiveness of its water recycling (Photo: Wiki)
The beer is being trumpeted as evidence in support of a water resources firm, whose job it is to recycle the sewage water used in the making of the unique brew.
Oregon-based Clean Water Services is so proud of its work that it recently applied to the Oregon Environmental Quality Commission to be allowed to brew its recycled water into beer and serve it.
Last week the company was granted permission to do so, but it cannot be sold commercially. The beer can instead be served at tastings hosted by the Oregon Brew Crew – an association of home brewers drafted in to create the beer.
Mark Jockers, a spokesman for Clean Water Services, said the idea is to change the way people think about wastewater, reports Oregon environmental news site EarthFix.
However, once it is created, it needs to pass local health authority tests in the state before it can be served up to experimenting beer fans.
Sorry, but isn’t most water through our taps recycled sewage water? Sounds like the Americans are not happy to take the p*** out of their water supply!
