German wine in ‘strong demand’ at Sotheby’s sale

Sotheby’s latest London sale saw strong demand for the wines of Egon Müller alongside the usual top selling Burgundies of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

DRC and Pétrus of course scooped nearly all of the top lots at the sale which made £709,419. Six bottles of 1993 Romanée-Conti made £54,050 to take the lead, followed by six magnum of 1989 Pétrus which made £32,900.

All of the top 10 lots were Bordeaux and Burgundy and eight, including the top two lots just mentioned, were bought by Asian clients.

Nonetheless, Stephen Mould, European head of Sotheby’s Wine Department, said: Interest focussed on the famous Continental Michelin-starred restaurant, appealing to wine lovers eager to acquire bottles for their cellars, with DRC and seldom-seen German Rieslings from Egon Müller in strong demand.”

A mixed four bottle case of Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese realised £1,034, another mixed lot of seven bottles from the 1981, 1988 and 1989 vintages made £423 as did six bottles of 1995 Eiswein from Schlossgut Diel.

There was also demand for top Champagne, three bottles of Salon 1999 made £517, six bottles of Jacques Selosse made £964 and six bottles of Dom Pérignon 2003 rosé achieved £881.
