Farage trumped by Gogglebox duo

UKIP MEP Nigel Farage’s attempts to match the drinking capabilities of Gogglebox stars Dom and Steph Parker ended with the politician having to change his trousers.

Farage was filming with the pair at their home in Kent ahead of a special edition of the Channel 4 hit show, which is based on watching other people watching TV.

The firebrand leader of UKIP, who carries his image of a beer-swilling man-of-the-people with pride, admitted that his hosts “were professionals” when it came to holding their drink – a factor that has made the husband-and-wife couple standout stars of the show.

This point was proved when Farage tripped over a step in the garden, smashing a glass of Champagne over his trousers.

Such a mess was made that he had to borrow a pair of Dom’s ripped jeans for the rest of his visit, according to Radio Times, who interviewed the politician from his office in Strasbourg.

“I had two, two-and-a-half pints in the pub with Dom,” Farage told the magazine, adding that he enjoyed “steady consumption…[so] two pints, about five or six glasses [of wine and Champagne]” over the course of the whole evening.

He added with a chuckle: “I rather got the impression that they do this every day.

“They are enormous fun. I like a drink but, crikey, these guys are professionals. I think I knew when enough was enough but it was certainly a consistent pace.”

Farage is the UKIP parliamentary candidate for the Thanet South constituency – where Dom and Steph live – for the general election in May.
