NFL player penalised for Captain pose
A rookie player for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers scored a touchdown last Sunday, but his Captain Morgan-inspired celebration incurred a penalty and an earful from his coach.
Austin Sefarian-Jenkins caught the second touchdown of his professional career last Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
Celebrating the catch he put the football under his foot and his hands on his hips mimicking the pose of Captain Morgan on Diageo’s famous rum brand.
The move backfired though in two ways. To begin with using the football as a prop is not allowed and drew a 15-yard penalty which the Falcons capitalised on, scoring a touchdown of their own and winning the game 27-17.
Sefarian-Jenkins knew he’d made a mistake as he trotted to the sidelines but after the game he posted a picture of the celebration on Instagram with the caption: “Everybody has a little captain in them. #Itsabucslife.”
This was spotted by Buccaneers coach, Lovie Smith, who gave the rookie a further rollicking and the photo was deleted.
As the Bucs are currently 1-8 and bottom of their division, coach Smith clearly thinks his players need to focus on winning games rather than pulling shapes and incurring unnecessary sanctions.
