Lidl has been named the UK’s best value supermarket for wine, beating the likes of Marks & Spencer and Waitrose.

That is according to an 18-month study by wine app Wotwine, which saw more than 4,000 wines on offer at all nine of the UK’s major supermarkets tested by an expert panel, which included four MWs, for their value.

The study found that nearly two thirds (65%) of the wines available to Lidl customers represented “value or extra value”, compared to chains such as Marks and Spencer where shoppers were found to be at risk of over-paying for wine on 74% of its range.

Budget supermarket Aldi came in second with 64% of its wines said to be good value, while Asda was third with a score of 48%.

In comparison, 60% of wines sold by Morrisons were said to represent poor value, followed closely by the Co-Op at 59%.

Taking in all of the supermarkets’ wines, just 26% were found to carry “extra value”, worth more than the price sold, while just17% were rated as “fair value” – worth the price paid.

Of all the wines tested 57% were rated as “poor value” – worth less that the price paid.

Alex Tilling, Wotwine’s senior taster, said: “Lidl’s small but well-selected range shines above the other supermarkets. Their value is the best in the market making them out wine supermarket of the year.

“We’ve also found that most consumers, understandably, have trouble deciding when face with a wall of similar wines in a major supermarket. They instead just plump for the wine on promotion, we’ve clearly shown that’s a faulty strategy.”

The study evaluated 4,161 wines over an 18-month period available at supermarkets including Asda, Aldi, the Co-op, Lidl, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.

It would be interesting to see the results adjusted for the across the board 25% discounts regularly offered by Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsburys and M&S.
