Three saved from flooded distillery

Three workers had to be rescued from a Diageo-owned Scotch distillery after it flooded.

Two men and a woman became trapped on the upper floor of the Strathmill Distillery in Moray on Tuesday after the River Isla burst its banks flooding the distillery following a week of stormy winds and torrential rain, as reported by The Scotsman. 

The workers had to be rescued from the building by boat.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “They got trapped within the building due to water rising so we needed to get a water rescue team who got access to them by boat.

“They were unhurt. They didn’t need hospital treatment. They just couldn’t get out of the building due to the high water outside. Our staff used water rescue equipment to move them out of the building on to the hydro boat.”

In a statement Diageo thanked the emergency services for their assistance adding that the flood water had now receded with the distillery currently being cleaned and damage assessed.

The Strathmill Distillery came under the ownership of Diageo in 1997.
