Man caught riding horse home from pub

Some might think hopping on the back of a horse after a night out drinking, rather than revving up a car, to be the responsible choice.

Being drunk in charge of an animal has been a criminal offence since 1872

Unfortunately that was not the case for Andrew John Thomas, 52, of Llanelli in Wales.

After perhaps one too many down the local pub, Thomas was caught by police trotting home on a horse, as reported by the South Wales Evening Post.

The 1872 Licensing Act states that a person can be fined for face a prison sentence of up to a month if caught drunk in charge of a carriage horse, cattle or steam engine.

Thomas, of Blaen y Pant, Maesybont, pleaded guilty to the charge of being drunk in charge of an animal.

Welsh magistrates told Thomas to “keep the peace” for six months, adding that if he was caught drunk and disorderly again he would be fined £50.
