Australia’s inner-most wine habits revealed
Riesling is Australia’s favourite white, according to a recent survey, which also revealed that 7% of its population has used the oven to heat up their wine.
The inner-most drinking habits of the Australian public were revealed in a recent survey of 6,000 people in The Great Vinomofo Census, the largest of its kind in the country, as reported by The Herald Sun.
In second place was Chardonnay while Sauvignon Blanc came in at third with just 40% of respondents choosing it as one of their favourites.
Completing the top five was Pinot Grigio and Semillon.
As for the reds Australia’s king pin, Shiraz, came out on top with 78% listing it as their favourite variety, followed by Cabernet and Pinot Noir.
The Barossa Valley came out on top as Australia’s favourite wine region with one in five citing their preference for the south Australian region.
26% of Australians counted wine as one of their “greatest obsessions” with almost half admitting to drinking three to five days a week with 80% preferring to stay loyal by drinking home-grown Australian wine.
A whopping 72% admitted to buying a wine they couldn’t pronounce while 63% said they felt intimidated by a restaurant wine list, with 47% admitting to feeling intimidated in a wine store.
Among the more unusual revelations was that 7% of those surveyed, thats 420 people, had at one time or another used their oven to heat up a bottle of wine.
18% said they would often mix wine with a soft drink while 360 cheeky respondents admitted to refilling an expensive bottle of wine with a cheaper one.
Andre Eikmeier, Vinomofo CEO and co-founder, said: ““The Great Vinomofo Wine Census is about the voice of the people — forget what we all think we know and let’s hear from the people who really matter — the drinker.
“For us, 2014 is the year of Riesling and Chardonnay, which surprised and delighted us all by coming out on top as the wine lovers’ choice for white wine, above Sauvignon Blanc.”
Absolute rubbish! This survey is not to be believed and is totally wrong. Riesling is NOT Australia’s favorite white, as well, heating up wine in the oven is absolutely crazy! They must have dreamed up some of the responses!!
I’m with Winestar
Who heats their wine in an oven?
I had to check if it’s April.
