Mickelson drinks DRC from Claret Jug
US golfer Phil Mickelson admitted to enjoying his time with the famous Claret Jug – trophy of the Open Championship – by using it to drink one of the world’s most expensive bottles of wine.
Speaking to The Scotsman, Mickelson said: “The people who know and love the game get a big kick out of it. They really appreciate what it means to hold such a famous trophy. And drink out of it.”
He continued. “I only let them drink the good stuff of course. There’s been nothing in there that is sub-par.
“But the best was a 1990 bottle of Romanée Conti wine. It wasn’t on my dime thankfully. It costs about $40,000.”
Only normally available through allocation, a bottle of 1990 Domaine de la Romanée Conti, or DRC, is currently available from L’Assemblage for £13,500 before taxes.
The Claret Jug, awarded to Mickelson after winning the British Open last year, is one of the most recognisable in sport.
The news comes as Mickelson hopes to defend his favourite drinking vessel, as the 2014 Open Championship tees off this Thursday.
