Crémant de Savoie becomes newest AOC
Sparkling wine from Savoy has been granted the right to make Crémant de Savoie, making it France’s newest Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée.
According to Le Dauphine, the Institut National de l’Origine affirmed the decision late last month after five years of procedures.
From this harvest, producers in Savoy will be able to produce sparkling wine and sell it as crémant from December of 2015, with the INAO laying down strict rules for its production with a minimum ageing period of 12 months.
The stipulations state that, to help maintain a more regional character, 60% of the blend must consist of the local grapes Jacquère and Altesse, with 40% at least of the final blend being Jacquère. The balance can be made up of Chasselas, Aligoté and Chardonnay.
Around 100 producers are apparently considering taking advantage
The ruling makes sparkling wine from Savoy the eigth crémant appellation in France, after Alsace, Bourgogne, Bordeaux, Loire, Limoux, Jura and Die in the Rhône.
