Macallan cask sells for HK$2m
A cask of 1991 Macallan has sold for nearly HK$2 million at auction in Hong Kong, well above its high estimate.
The sale of fine and rare spirits by Spink saw a wide array of liquids from rum, to Scotch, Cognac and eaux-de-vies go on sale last Friday.
The highlight of the auction was the sale of a whole cask of 1991 Macallan – the equivalent of 490 bottles.
With an asking price of $1.6m, the hammer eventually came down at $1,952,000.
Other leading lots included a bottle of 1979 Macallan for $19,520, a Louis XIII Cognac from the 1980s for $24,400 and a magnum of 1975 Demerara rum made $17,080.
A collection of grappas from Romano Levi, with original hand-drawn labels, also sold for between $5,000 and $5,500 a bottle.
