Baker creates Champagne and gold leaf loaf
A baker based in north Wales has created what he claims to be the UK’s most expensive bread made with Champagne and edible 24-carat gold.
As reported by the BBC, having trained under Raymond Blanc, Robert Didier of Orchard Pigs bakery in Wrexham, charges £25 for his luxury loaves.
Didier hopes the expensive experiment will revive a centuries-old tradition when exotic ingredients in bread were viewed as a status symbol.
“The golden bread is not something you’d necessarily want every day but for a special occasion it’s got a bit of wow factor to it,” Didier told the BBC.
“In the 1500s, the baker of the palace or the manor house would be expected to produce loaves that reflected the status of the lord or the king so lots of interesting ingredients were included,” he added.
Didier began his career at Raymond Blanc’s bakery Maison Blanc in Oxford. He founded Orchard Pigs in 2003.
