Exploding Prosecco prompts recall
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has issued a warning to consumers who have bought a certain Prosecco at state liquor stores recently after reports of “spontaneous explosions”.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, several bottles of “Indigenous Selections Prosecco Brut 2013” have exploded while on the shelves.
The chairman of the PLCB, Joseph Brion, said in a statement: “Consumers should use caution when handling this product.
“While we have not had any reports from consumers who may have been affected, we want to take every precaution in order to avoid a safety issue.”
Since issuing the statement, it was reported that a bottle exploded in someone’s home but that nobody was hurt.
Consumers have been asked not to bring the bottles back to stores but to dispose of them “as carefully as possible”.
It is thought some 2,000 bottles have been sold from the 19,000 purchased by the PLCB. Just as in the UK, Prosecco is growing in popularity in the US and last year volume sales exceeded those of Champagne for the first time.
