Tennessee petition for wine in grocery stores begins
A petition calling for wine to be sold in grocery stores in Tennessee has begun with the aim of forcing a referendum this November.
According to WREG Memphis, an organisation called “Red White and Food” will be out in force in grocery stores across the state from this week getting shoppers to sign the petition.
A “wine in retail food store bill” was passed by Tennessee House and the state senate in March and subsequently signed into law by governor Bill Haslam.
However, Haslam added the caveat that while, in theory, wine could be sold in grocery stores it would have to be approved by a referendum.
“The petition process is very important. The wine issue will not make it onto the November 4th ballot unless the required number of ballot signatures is collected in each community,” said Democratic representative Antonio Parkinson.
If the referendum passes then wine could be sold in grocery stores from July 2016, a poll back in March apparently showed an 82% approval rating for wine in grocery stores.
