‘Dr Vodka’ driver was ‘two times’ over limit

The driver of a Lamborghini which crashed at speeds of 100 mph killing its passenger, vodka entrepreneur Malcolm Lloyd, was more than two times over the legal drinking limit.

Andres Esteban Toro, 42, was charged last week with vehicular manslaughter after the fatal crash.

However, following toxicology tests which confirmed he was “more than two times the legal limit”, additional charged of DUI manslaughter and DUI serious bodily injury have been brought against him, according to a report by the Miami Herald.

The collision happened near Miami beach in Florida in the early hours on Thursday when the $400,000 sports car rear-ended a stationery SUV, killing Lloyd and seriously injuring both drivers.

Police said Toro was driving at 120 mph on a roadway where the speed limit is 50 mph.

A Miami judge ordered that Toro, who is still hospitalised at Jackson Memorial Hospital, post a larger $150,000 bond in light of the additional charges.

Toro, who lives in a multi-million dollar Coconut Grove condo, is said to own an Aston Martin, a Mercedez-Benz and a Range Rover, and has the means to flee now that he is facing an additional five year prison sentence if convicted, prosecutor Laura Adams told the court.

Lloyd, a 42-year-old entrepreneur affectionately known as “Dr Vodka”, abandoned a career in medicine to set up the Double Cross Vodka brand in 2008 and also founded the Old Nassau drinks company.

In a statement the Nassau drinks company said it was “heartbroken” over the loss of its “friend and leader.”

The driver of the SUV, Raul Alfonzo, suffered serious injuries but is now recuperating in hospital, along with Toro.
