Seppeltsfield releases rare WW1 wine
Five rare vintages of Tawny ‘Port’ dating from 1914 to 1918 have been released by the south Australian Seppeltsfield Estate, in partnership with the Australian War Memorial.
Just 100 Para Tawny World War I Commemorative Anthologies have been made featuring five wines produced during each of the years of the First World War, as well as a specially-struck Australian War Memorial medallion made by the Royal Australian Mint.
One of the collections is set to be gifted to Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge who will be visiting the Australian War Memorial on ANZAC day as part of their tour of Australia.
Each collection is housed in a wooden box made from Australian Jarrah timber and is individually numbered with certificates of authenticity and priced at AUS$5,000.
Warren Randall, Seppeltsfield owner and managing director and the son and grandson of First and Second World War servicemen, said he was delighted to commemorate the First World War with such a “unique offering”.
He said: “My family background of war service helped engender the idea to herald the centenary observance through the limited release of Tawny made at the same time as our ANZAC traditions were being formed.”
The Royal Australian Mint was commissioned to strike a medallion for each set, which was moulded, cast and struck using the same traditional metallic art techniques as military awards and decorations.
Mr Ross MacDiarmid, chief executive officer of the Royal Australian Mint, said: “We feel by honouring military decoration techniques in its production, the Seppeltsfield and Australian War Memorial medallion complements the provenance and authenticity of the set.”
“It was an honour for our team to be involved and the set and medallion will no doubt make a great historic collectors piece.”
A proportion of the profits made from the sale of each set will be donated back to the Australian War Memorial.
