Brewer releases whisky-infused beer

Glasgow’s Wellpark Brewery has launched a new premium beer aged with whisky-infused oak.

Tennent’s whisky aged 6% abv beer is brewed from three types of Scottish malt, four hop varieties, including Tettnang, Aurora, Zeus and Summit, and water from Loch Katrine.

Its fermentation process takes a minimum of three weeks and involves the warm maturation and ageing of the beer with single malt whisky infused oak chips.

Paul Condron, Tennent’s marketing director, said: “Tennent’s may be synonymous with lager, but Tennent’s historically was the most successful ale brewer in Scotland.

“As the oldest and largest brewery in Scotland we feel we are in a great position to combine our beer heritage with the nation’s other favourite drink; whisky.

“Reaction to the beer has been extremely positive both at home and in international markets.”

The Wellpark Brewery claims to be Scotland’s oldest brewery with a history dating back to 1556 when the Tennent family were farmers who traded as maltmen and brewed beer in Glasgow.

The first recorded export of Tennent’s was in 1797 to expatriate Scots in the Americas, and by the mid 1800s Tennent’s was the largest exporter of ale in the world.

Brewing in Wellpark itself can be traced back to the 12th century when the monks of Glasgow Cathedral brewed for the public.

Tennent’s Beer Aged with Whisky Oak is available online and in store at The Whisky Shop, and at selected on-trade outlets including Inverlochy Castle Hotel, The Torridon and The Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland.
