Rhône icon makes top three at fine wine sale
A case of 1978 Guigal La Mouline sold for double its high estimate at Christie’s London sale last week.
The 12 bottles of the single vineyard wine from the northern Rhône was given a £8,000 to £10,000 estimate but was eventually sold for £23,500 by an Asian client.
It was the second most expensive lot at the auction, behind six magnums of 1982 Pétrus (which at £35,250 only just passed its low estimate) and just ahead of 12 bottles of 1976 Henri Jayer Nuits-Saint-Georges, Les Meurgers (which surpassed its high estimate by over £5,000).
The “La Las” are three Rhône wine attracting quite a lot of interest at present.
The release of the 2010s in February caused a flurry of activity on Liv-ex, which boosted the Rhône’s levels to five times its monthly average.
The sale made £1.1 million in total and the next London auction will be online only and runs from 3-15 April.
