Christie’s tops 2013 wine auction sales

Christie’s has topped the rankings for wine sales in 2013 with a £48 million total.

The top lot of the year was a case of 12 1978 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti for £295,838, a new world record for a case of wine and DRC.

David Elswood, international director of Christie’s Wine in Europe and Asia: “In a challenging year for the fine wine trade globally, we at Christie’s are delighted with our 2013 year-end totals with particularly solid results across our network of European sales and encouraging totals in New York and Hong Kong.

“Our new on-line Signature Cellar sales go from strength to strength and will become a particular focus in 2014 alongside some unique single-owner live sales to be announced early in the New Year.”

The top lots of the year (which can be seen here) were dominated by DRC as well as a collection of Château Latour which sold in Hong Kong for £187,364.

There were also two collections of Mouton Rothschild in the biggest sellers, a vertical from 1945-2008 making €207,721 in Geneva and a magnum collection from 1929 to 2009 going for £138,058 in Hong Kong.

That DRC was one of the most profitable wines last year echoes Sotheby’s results where the Burgundian property was the most valuable too.
