Man falls through pavement into ‘beer tunnel’
A pensioner fell six-metres after a “beer tunnel” into an old brewery caused the pavement to collapse under his feet.
The 62-year-old was walking home in Munich on Friday when the pavement crumbled beneath him revealing a six-metre shaft beneath the streets into what is thought to be an old brewery.
According to a report in The Local, an English speaking German newspaper, the man tripped and cut his leg open after falling into the hole but was not seriously injured.
Firefighters have since closed up the hole with concrete and inspected the surrounding area to ensure its safety.
The origins of the hole remain unconfirmed but there have been suggestions that the tunnel might once have ventilated a brewer’s cellar used for producing Munich’s famous beer.
