Independent wine merchant dies
Independent UK wine merchant and founding member of the Independent Wine Buyers Consortium, John Hynard, has died.
John Hynard
Mr Hynard, of family run merchants Hynard Hughes, died suddenly of a massive heart attack on 27 December 2013 after more than 50 years in the trade.
He joined his father in the family business of Hynard Hughes in 1960 after serving three years national service with the Army.
He was one of the founder members of The Independent Wine Buyers Consortium and built up his family’s Leicester-based wine and spirit wholesale business to ten retail shops at its peak.
Finally selling the majority of the business, Mr Hynard retired to Tenerife in 2004 but kept his hand in the trade with some brokerage and En Primeur trading.
He was a keen fly fisherman and golfer, latterly fitting in three rounds a week.
His eldest son, Colin Hynard, said: “He was your typically jolly, independent wine merchant.
“He used to have a bit of fun with the reps trying to get the best price, like everyone would.
“He was a very well liked man.”
My Hynard leaves behind his wife Sheila and two sons, Colin and Simon.
Saddened me to read this Colin, but as your Dad would surely have agreed “life must ultimately conclude.”
The laughs we had together in the sixties will remain with me until my “conclusion.”

Sorry to hear about your father’s passing, I used to live next door to him on Spencefield Lane and we were always together – putting pennies on the railway line and making pipes out of corks which he got from his Father, so that we could smoke dried used tea leaves. So many memories besides.
