Penfolds collection in online sale

A collection of nearly 100 bottles of Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Hermitage is up for sale on auction website Grays Online this week.

Split over 30 lots, the auction highlight is a set of 27 magnums of Grange Hermitage spanning the 1979 to 2005 vintages. With three days of the auction remaining, it has a current bid of A$15,009.

Aside from this showpiece there is a single bottle of the 1955 as well as vintages through to 1998 in bottle or magnum.

When the auction began on Monday this week (26 August) many of the bottles were available for less than $200 when bought in a case of six – which is possible for the 1990, 1991 and 1997 vintages.

The bottles were obtained from the cellar of a single collector in Australia and Grays Online apparently predicted that many of the bottles will sell for between 65% and 80% of their normal retail cost.

Some current prices include $559 for a bottle of the 1965, $1,324 for a magnum of the 1998 and $529 for the 1992.
