Moon and Lynch voted best TV publicans
TV soap characters Alfie Moon and Bet Lynch have been named the UK’s favourite TV landlord and landlady.
A survey of 1,000 adults by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) showed that Alfie (played by Shane Richie), of the Queen Vic in EastEnders, was the clear winner in the landlord category, receiving around a quarter of the votes – almost twice as many as any of the other candidates such as Frank Butcher (Mike Reid), also from EastEnders, or Coronation Street’s Alec Gilroy (Roy Barraclough).
Voting was closer for landladies, with EastEnders’ Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) receiving 20% of the total, just behind the winner, Coronation Street’s Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear), who received 22%.
To mark the competition, Camra is offering a free pint of beer to anyone who goes to the Great British Beer Festival, at London’s Olympia, dressed as Alfie or Bet today (Thursday).
