Cockburn’s wins Barco Rabelo race
Cockburn’s “Rabelo” has won the annual race against the other Port lodges up the Douro River.
The race, now in its 30th year, is held on 24 June, the feast day of Saint John, patron saint of Oporto.
The Cockburn’s boat is named after one of its vineyards, Quinta dos Canais, and apparently took the lead early on in the race.
It was only when passing under the Arrabida Bridge that to other boats from the 16-strong flotilla attempted to challenge her but she maintained her lead to the end and finished 6 boat lengths ahead of her closest competitor.
Skipper Rupert Symington said that his crew’s, “great teamwork, skilful tactics and sheer determination to win made all the difference.”
The win is good news for the Symington family, which bought Cockburn’s back in 2010, as it is illustrative of the return to the “glory days” that Symington Family Estates has been focusing on.
