Two special trophy awards, of only four presented, went to Domaine André Vatan Saint François, 2011, Sancerre, produced by André Vatan and Domaine Gibault Sauvignon Blanc, 2012, Touraine, produced by EARL Gibault Pascal & Danielle.
The tasting was undertaken by an international panel of wine experts from 16 countries who tasted a total of 807 wines from 20 different countries. The British panel was represented by Loire specialist, Jim Budd, Sauvignon Blanc expert Jamie Goode and David Cobbold a British wine consultant, writer and educator living in France.
Jamie Goode, who will be showcasing a selection of Loire wines during a Masterclass at Vinexpo, said: “I was really impressed by the performance of the Loire wines in the competition.
“The Loire sets the benchmark for Sauvignon – particularly so now that quality has improved across the board in recent years. And it’s not just the more famous regions that are excelling – Touraine Sauvignon is really impressive at the moment.”
In total 45% of the medal winners came from the Loire, along with the two special trophies the region picked up 35 gold and 68 silver medals.
