’82 Bordeaux dominates Christie’s auction

Pétrus, Lafite and Lafleur 1982 topped Christie’s London sale this week.

Held yesterday (2 May), the sale made £1,242,528 in total and was 93% sold by both value and volume.

Leading the sale was a case of 1982 Pétrus which made £35,100. Lafite followed with a case selling for £26,910 and then Lafleur for £25,740.

The Pétrus and Lafleur were bought by Asian clients. Despite the solid prices, as has been the trend with many auctions so far this year, the lots did not exceed their high estimates.

The Lafite in fact came nowhere near its high estimate of £35,000. On the other hand, a single magnum of Cheval Blanc 1947 almost doubled its pre-sale estimate when it sold for £15,210.

Chris Munro, head of department at Christie’s, said: “The Fine and Rare Wines sale saw tremendous results selling 93% by lot and by value, demonstrating the continuing strength of the market for high quality Bordeaux.

“We were particularly pleased with the superb private collection of Finest Bordeaux, which sparked intense competition and realised £646,191.”
