New Harrods head wine buyer appointed

Harrods has appointed Nick Fleming as head wine and spirits buyer following the departure of Jo Ahearne MW.

Fleming has worked in the wine department of the Knightsbridge-based luxury department store for 30 years.

He was promoted from assistant wine and spirits buyer to buyer in November, when Ahearne MW left to start her own wine consultancy with the ultimate aim of making her own wine.

Speaking about the long hankered after role, Fleming told the drinks business:

“Wine and Spirits retailing has changed dramatically over the last couple of years and the top tier is no exception, bringing its own particular challenges.

“I see 2013 as being the ideal time for me to be given this opportunity in a role that I consider to be the best job in this field.”

Fleming’s most recent acquisition for Harrods is a collection of four rare bottles of Courvoisier Cognac from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

A bottle of 1851 Courvoisier & Curlier Freres Extra is on sale for £38,000; 1884 Courvoisier, Fine Champagne for £24,500; 1900 Courvoisier, Grande Fin Champagne for £12,500 and 1920 Courvoisier, Fine Champagne de Luxe, for £9,500.
