Top 10 wines in the British press

We round-up the top 10 wines featured in the British press last weekend.

Olly Smith in the Mail on Sunday says “Olé for Spain” and sings the praises of Bierzo as “just one of many unsung Spanish heroes pumping out exciting modern vino”.

In the Sunday Telegraph, Susy Atkins urges us to look beyond the obvious in New Zealand’s wine offering: “I have friends deeply stuck in the wine rut that is New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.”

Meanwhile Fiona Beckett in The Guardian urges us to get out of the lager rut to solve the perceived problem of what to drink with spicy food.

Descendientes de J Palacios, Petalos 2009 (£16.95 Berry Bros. & Rudd)

In The Mail on Sunday, Olly Smith says  “Keep an eye out for wines made by producers such as Alvaro Palacios… his Petalos 2009 offers a glimpse of the region’s stellar potential”.

The Ned Marlborough Pinot Grigio 2011 (£7.99 x 2 Majestic)

Susy Atkin in the Sunday Telegraph says “Majestic has a strong selection of ‘other’ NZ whites, including this succulent young Pinot Gris with a juicy pear flavour and floral perfume”

Villa Maria Private Bin Gewürztraminer 2010/11 (£10.99 Waitrose, Sainsbury)

Susy Atkins also suggests this as an alternative: “Melon, lychee and grapefruit make up a fruity, off-dry cocktail here, and there’s a hint of rose petal on the aroma.”

Escarpment The Edge Martinborough Pinot Noir 2011 (£13.99 Waitrose)

Victoria Moore in The Telegraph: “There’s some oak, but not too much, and a lovely, breezy, fresh, red berrylike lift to it.”

2011 Tesco Finest Vinho Verde (£7.29, Tesco)

Anthony Rose in The Independent delights in “freshness in a summer’s evening wine of relatively moderate alcohol”.

Susan Balbo Zohar Torrontes (£10.95 Butlers Wine Cellar + independents)

Fiona Beckett in The Guardian sings its praises: “This was so good with a plate of chilli-spiked noodles that I think it’s going to be my new go-to wine for Asian dishes.”

Spice Trail Rosé, Hungary (£6.49 Ocado)

Fiona Beckett also rates this as “the best all-rounder” in a recent contest to match wine with Indian food.

Cellier des Dauphins Grignan Les Adhemar 2010 (£5 Asda)

Terry Kirby in the Independent on Sunday suggests this “highly drinkable” bargain from the Coteaux du Tricastin that’s “medium-bodied and well-balanced between fruit and the traditionally peppery slant of the area”.

Casa Silva Lolol Viognier 2011 (£13.99 Wine Rack)

Terry Kirby believes this “fully demonstrates the range of Viognier’s attractions. Subtly aromatic on the nose, the flavours simply explode on the palate”

Extra Special Dão, Portugal 2010 (£6.98, Asda)

David Williams in The Observer gives the thumbs up to “this reliably brilliant red from central Portugal”
