UK alcohol brand recalled in Canada
Two Liquor Control Commissions in Canada are voluntarily recalling a brand of British alcohol after finding it contaminated with glass fragments.
Two provinces in Canada, Manitoba and Alberta, have issued recalls Woody’s Sarsaparilla Original Alcoholic Beverage.
Woody’s Canada owner is Beverage Brands (UK), a privately owned company located in Torquay.
A company spokesperson told the drinks business, “We can confirm that a voluntary product recall has been initiated in Manitoba, Canada for its Woody’s Sasparilla cooler. The recall follows routine testing, which highlighted an isolated incident of possible contamination.
“We would like to thank our Canadian consumers for their understanding at this time and confirm that we are doing everything necessary to ensure that all our products meet our own stringent standards. We would also like to thank the relevant Liquor Boards for their support.
“We have a history of exporting over 10 million bottles per annum to the Canadian market for 17 years and consumer safety remains our priority as a responsible manufacturer.”
The Manitoba Liquor Control Commission is recalling Woody’s Sasparilla Original Alcoholic Beverage and is suspending the sale of all other Woody’s alcoholic beverage products in Manitoba.
While Alberta’s liquor commission is also asking liquor stores, restaurants, pubs and other drinking establishments to take off their shelves any Sarsparilla from Woody’s lot number BB16/02/14. Consumers can return the bottles for a store refund.
The commission’s quality control department found glass contamination in one particular lot, but there have so far been no reported injuries associated with consumption.
Manitoba’s commission said in a news release that the Canadian Food Inspection Food Agency has also issued a warning about the product.
It’s not the first time that Woody’s Canada owner Beverage Brands has run into problems in Canada. Last November, the federal food inspection agency warned the public not to consume Woody’s brand Mexican Lime Alcoholic Vodka Beverage because of glass fragments.
At the time, the agency said there had been one reported injury from consumption of the product, which was distributed in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario.
A few weeks later, the warning was expanded to include a wide range of other Woody’s drinks, including several coolers and vodka beverages.
