Harding’s 50 Great Portuguese Wines unveiled
The Douro has come out on top in Julia Harding MW’s “50 Great Portuguese Wines” unveiled today.
The list of 50 wines that Harding has spent the last year tasting features 27 reds, 18 whites, one sparkling and four fortified wines.
Douro wines led the way with 14 wines, with Dão and Alentejo also featuring prominently.
Harding, who won “Journalist of the Year” at the Portuguese Wine Awards in 2011, has spent the past year tasting her way around Portugal to find her top 50 wines.
Her selection, which she described as “wines I want to enjoy over the course of an evening and share with friends, not wines for sipping and spitting,” is made up of wines made exclusively from Portuguese grape varieties.
She added, “This is just the tip of the iceberg but, if I have done my job well, these 50 wines represent the glorious depth and breadth of Portugal’s wine world. The synergy of distinctive and high-quality indigenous grape varieties with the country’s dramatic landscape and climate is being creatively expressed by her hard-working and imaginative winegrowers.”
Nuno Vale, marketing director at Wines of Portugal, said: “Our annual 50 Great Portuguese Wines tasting continues to be a success and the event offers us a fantastic way of demonstrating the quality and diversity of our country’s wines. Julia’s selection proves that Portugal can really compete in the UK marketplace and has the ability to produce world-class wines.”
For the first time, consumers are also invited to attend a special event where they have the chance to taste Julia’s selection of wines and sample some Portuguese canapés.
