EPL debates man of the match Champagne
The English Premier League is thinking of changing their man of the match prize of champagne to acknowledge the multi-faith diversity of top-flight players.
Traditionally the player voted as man of the match for a game is given a bottle of Champagne to celebrate – usually presented in front of television cameras by a team mate.
But some players are forfeiting the prize on religious grounds because they do not drink alcohol.
In a statement a spokesman for the premier league admitted that advice had been sought to ensure that all individuals were catered for, and no offence was caused, when it came to post-match awards.
However it was agreed the Champagne was “treated as a highly-coveted award” and no further steps were taken.
Last Sunday Manchester City’s two goal hero – Yaya Toure (pictured) – gave his Champagne reward to team mate Joleon Lescott saying: “I don’t drink because I am a Muslim, so you keep it.”
In total, 68 nationalities have been represented in the Premier League. This Sunday sees the end of the season with Manchester City set to seal the title against QPR at the Etihad Stadium.
