Online bidding boosts Christie’s sale
Asian buyers made full use of Christie’s online set-up as they bid for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Pétrus last week.
The top lot was a six-pack of DRC Romanée-Conti 1996 which sold for £46,000 – top estimate £40,000.
This was followed by a case of 1990 Pétrus at £41,400 (high estimate £35,000) and then more DRC, this time a six-bottle case of 1969 Romanée-Conti at £40,250 (£30,000).
All of the top lots were bought by Asian clients.
Chris Munro, director, London Wine Department commented: “Christie’s second London wine sale of the year achieved a tremendous result overall, with prices soaring above their pre-sale estimates for all categories. Wines from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti continue to show further gains as demand for top end Burgundy remains strong.
“Christie’s Live brought in a great number of bids, with over 50% of the sale bought or directly underbid online by clients in the UK, Switzerland, America, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore, among others.
“We were also pleased to offer an additional bidding facility to our Asian clients, resulting in two of the top three lots of the sale being purchased by Asian clients bidding via Simulcast video link from Christie’s Hong Kong saleroom.”
Overall, the auction was 98% sold by lot and 99% by value with a total of £1,270,944.
