Top Totty beer banned by MPs

A beer judged offensive to female MPs has been removed from a bar in the House of Commons.

Guest ale Top Totty, brewed by Slater’s in Stafford, apparently left the shadow equalities minister, Kate Green, “disturbed” when she saw it in the Strangers’ Bar in the Houses of Parliament.

She immediately demanded bar staff remove it from sale, followed soon afterwards by an announcement from the Commons’ Leader Sir George Young who said that “action will be taken”.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Green has called for a debate on “dignity at work in Parliament” and said in a statement: “I was disturbed last night to learn that the guest beer in the Strangers’ Bar is called Top Totty and there is a picture of a nearly naked woman on the tap.”

Young promised that the “appropriate action would be taken”.

The Conservative MP for Stafford, Jeremy Lefroy, suggested using the ale from his constituency as a guest beer saying it would: “Showcase a fantastic and award-winning beer.

“’Slater’s Brewery produces many popular beers which have been brewed locally for more than 15 years and it is great to be able to share some of Staffordshire’s finest produce with colleagues in Parliament,” he said.

The 4% ale, which is brewed with Whitbread Golding hops, is described by the brewery as “a stunning blonde beer, full-bodied with a voluptuous hop aroma”.

The speaker’s wife Sally Bercow reportedly tweeted: “Cannot *believe* that there’s a beer called Top Totty on sale in the Commons! Outrageous – does Mr B know?”

Bercow shot to fame last year with an appearance on reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother and by posing in only a bedsheet on the cover of London’s Evening Standard.

MP’s need to get a life and a sense of humour and concentrate on more important things.

  2. We tried to buy some Top Totty this morning from Slater’s who are one of our local brewery’s, but they have sold out and have a two week waiting list following the publicity.
Proof perhaps that MP’s do help small businesses!

I’m thinking Kate Green probably needs a Bishop’s Finger to sort her out…
