Stars come out at Hospices de Beaune
French stars of film and fashion turned out to help sell the top lots at the 151st Hospices de Beaune auction.
A 460 litre barrel was the highlight of the auction, filled with Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi, Cuvée Baronne du Baÿ.
The barrel was bought for €110,000 by Stephen Williams, managing director of the Antique Wine Company. The barrel will be kept in the cellars of Maison Albert Bichot until ready for bottling.
Fashion figurehead Inès de la Fressange and actor Christian Clavier helped in the sale, the proceeds of which go to the charities France Alzheimer and Mécénat Chirugie Cardiaque.
Maison Bichot bought a further 97 barrels during the sale – making it the biggest buyer at the sale – for a total of €569,500.
Albéric Bichot commented on the sale: “In an uncertain economic context, amateurs and professionals from all around the world have still supported this event.
“Even if the average price per barrel has decreased, it is necessary to bear in mind that the previous years’ prices were very high. After two consecutive years of sharp increases, this price decrease was necessary.
“If Burgundy is to continue to attract attention from wine lovers, it is necessary for us to remain reasonable and continue to make Burgundy wines that shine all over the world.”
In total, the sale raised €4.9 million and sold 761 barrels, covering 32 red and 13 white cuvées, an increase on last year when 647 barrels were auctioned off.
