Bishop comes to Kingston
The Bishop Out Of Residence is the latest arrival on the bar and restaurant scene in Kingston-Upon-Thames.
Named after the nearby former residence of England’s 14th century chancellor and wealthiest inhabitant William of Wykham, the Surrey venue promises the best of British food and drink.
Head chef Thomas White, who has previously worked under Marco Pierre White, has drawn up a menu which includes Gressingham duck with root vegetable terrine and spiced apple chutney; pot roast chicken with black pudding, fondant potatoes, neeps and savoy cabbage; and, for pudding, crowd pleasers such as sticky toffee pudding.
In place of petits fours to accompany coffee, the venue keeps to its British theme with retro sweets, from pear drops to jelly babies or cola bottles.
Other special features include its weekend Sunday roasts and a table stocked with an extensive selection of British cheeses.
Bar food is also a focus here, offering lighter snacks of home-made Scotch eggs, pork scratchings with smoked paprika, door-stop sandwiches and Welsh rarebit.
The upstairs River Room Lounge offers a richly decorated bar, complete with weekend DJ, serving the after-work crowd everything from Young’s Bitter, mojitos and an international range of wines, all priced below £30. Sharing dishes are the focus here, from grilled flat iron steak to courgette chips with saffron garlic mayonnaise.
Next to the River Room Lounge is the Red Room, available for private hire for parties of up to 25. To bring in the summer crowd, the Bishop Out Of Residence offers a riverside terrace. Dogs are welcomed with complimentary biscuits, while children are offered a bag of breadcrumbs to feed the ducks.

this place looks stunning – are children welcome inside?
The Bishop has been in Kingston for decades and it’s named after a book. Do some research.
