Customers invest millions in online retailer

Naked Wines has revealed that its "Angels" have pledged a collective £10 million investment into unearthing new winemaking talent.

The investment in the UK online wine retailer is a 50% increase on last year’s fund, and will be put towards attracting new winemaking talent, who don’t have the cash flow of support networks to make inroads in the industry, to the UK.

Part of the investment will also be ploughed back into Naked Wines’ existing winemakers who are looking to improve the quality of their range.

Naked Wines founder Rowan Gormley (pictured) said of the allocation: “We’ve helped 22 winemakers set-up shop, create 85 new wines, and sell over one million bottles of their wine since we launched [two years ago] – and our goal for 2011 is to double this.”

The company stated that one couple to especially benefit from the investment is Felipe and Constanza Garcia of Chilean winery Bravado Wines. The couple raised enough money to venture alone with their winemaking, following more than 1,000 Naked Angels pre-ordering 18,000 bottles of their first solo vintage in one afternoon.

The Garcias went on to win the Best Sauvignon Blanc Trophy at this year’s Annual Wines of Chile Awards.

Naked Wines has 20,000 Naked Wine "Angels", all of whom sponsor winemakers and in return get preferential prices as well as an open invitation to visit the vineyards they sponsor.
