Confusion at Asda as vodka turns out to be water
A bottle of Smirnoff bought in Asda turned out to contain nothing but plain water, it emerged last week.
The store in Accrington, in the north of England, has admitted to receiving more complaints from customers with the same issue.
The bottle in question has now been returned to Smirnoff’s owners Diageo through the supermarket, which intends on investigating the incident.
Asda customer and Smirnoff drinker Angela Fielding told local newspaper The Blackburn Citizen: “I felt foolish bringing the bottle back and saying that there was only water in it, but when I got to the store I heard that other people had had the same problem. I’d like it explained to me what exactly happened.”
A spokeswoman for Asda told the newspaper: “We’re investigating the matter with our suppliers,” while a spokeswoman for Diageo said: “We take all complaints very seriously and are in communication with both Asda and the consumer concerned about the matter.”
Fielding was given a £20 voucher by Smirnoff to cover the cost of the bottle.
