Supersized Cheval Blanc smashes auction estimates

An 18-litre bottle of 2006 Cheval-Blanc smashed estimates when it was auctioned at Sotheby’s yesterday.

The bottle, valued between £3,600 to £4,800 in the Finest and Rarest Wines & Vintage Ports auction, went for over triple the estimate with a final figure of £16,100.

The melchior weighs a hefty 25kg, stands 75cm high and contains enough wine to serve 144 glasses.

A Sotheby’s spokesman said it was “phenomenally rare” to have such a large bottle and especially one from Bordeaux.
