Tesco launches wine app
The world’s first visual search Apple iPhone Application has been launched by Tesco. The Tesco Wine App uses image recognition and discover functions to search wines for its club customers.
If a wine label photo matches that of one of Tesco’s Wine by the Case wines, even if the image is slightly distorted by difficult lighting conditions or by being tilted, the App will feature tasting notes and a guide price of the matching wine.
The App’s discover button can also find a wine using criteria such as food-matching choices, budgetary restraints or country of origin.
Laura Wade-Gery, Tesco.com’s chief executive officer, said: “We hope this will democratise and demystify wine know-how by making information much more accessible. But we’re advising using the App cautiously if you’re at a dinner party – exercise good manners and discretion at all times.”
Developed by Cortexica Vision Systems, the free-to-download App is the second App to be launched by Tesco, following its Store Locator App that was released earlier this year.
