Back at No.1

Manchester is preparing itself to welcome back The No.1 Club, an iconic part of city’s gay scene during the ‘80s.

Having closed the doors to his One Central Street night club, owner Ross Mackenzie will reopen on 25 September with a 21st century reincarnation of the legendary venue on its original site.

The launch party will get off to a suitably glamorous start with Mirror Mirror Club, "the infamous night for hookers, lookers, trannies and truckers”. Naturally, the queen herself, Jodie Harsh (pictured), will be there lighting up the night with her own inimitable style .

In keeping with its image as the ultimate glamorous disco, The No.1 Club will play host to Federation, the north’s most high profile gay club promoters, who take over a brand new Saturday night slot. The venue will also run regular student nights, with favourites Murkage, Disco Bloodbath and Horsemeat Disco already in the line-up.

Commenting on his latest project, Mackenzie said: “I am really excited about this huge new beginning for us, my aim is to work with new and exciting club nights that draw in the crowds and continue to surprise. Now is the time for something different – and the No.1 Club promises to be just that.”

The original owner of The No.1 Club, Jeff Bibby, was equally excited about its return to glory. Promising to be one of the first to check out the revamped venue, he commented: “I feel that the No.1 Club has a special place in the hearts of Manchester gay clubbers and to see it back in business again is a real treat and one that we should really embrace as a community.”
