Cellar door store forced to close
A shop owned by Welsh winery Penarth Vineyard has been forced to close by its local council.
Powys County Council claims the store does not have planning permission and has subsequently shut the shop.
Owners Bernard and Tanya Herbert claim the store is exempt from requiring planning permission on the grounds it qualifies as part of an agricultural development. However, the Council does not believe this to be a valid reason for no planning permission and now the shop is closed during the busy tourist season.
The winery has not yet decided whether to contest the decision as it could be very expensive but now fears it is the only winery in the world without a cellar door operation even though it continues to sell its wines to restaurants and hotels.
The case is due before Welshpool magistrates in mid-October.
